Tummy Tuck in Reading, PA

What Is a Tummy Tuck?

Tummy tuck surgery (abdominoplasty) is a popular procedure that improves the appearance of the stomach area and surrounding midsection. Desired by men and women of all ages, this procedure is effective in eliminating excess skin and stubborn fat deposits that diet and exercise fail to improve.

The Benefits of a Tummy Tuck

  • Flatter stomach
  • More slender waistline
  • Tighter abdominal muscles
  • Renewed sense of self-confidence

The Difference Between a Tummy Tuck and Liposuction

Liposuction is an efficient procedure for removing stubborn fat and is often used during tummy tuck surgery to create a more slender midsection. However, it cannot effectively eliminate loose skin or tighten the underlying muscles of the abdomen. Tummy tuck surgery is the only procedure that tightens stretched abdominal muscles and removes excess skin to achieve a more toned and attractive midsection.

Tummy Tuck for Men

Abdominal wall laxity and excess skin in the lower stomach can prevent some men from having a flat, toned abdomen. Whether the cause of a “spare tire” or “beer belly” is bariatric surgery, weight loss, or failed attempts to lose weight through healthy eating and exercise, a tummy tuck can help. Tummy tuck surgery can effectively restore a flatter and more defined appearance to the abdomen. Dr. Schlechter makes an incision in the lower abdomen, tightens the abdominal muscles, and permanently removes excess skin and stubborn fat deposits. A tummy tuck for men can:

  • Tighten and tone the stomach
  • Remove excess skin
  • Get rid of stubborn fat
  • Flatten the waistline

Treatable Areas

Full Tummy Tuck

The full tummy tuck provides more definition than a mini tummy tuck and addresses the entire abdominal area.

  • Incisions are made below the stomach (hip bone to hip bone) and around the navel.
  • Excess skin and fat are removed from the entire midsection.
  • The abdominal muscles are tightened.

Mini/Partial Tummy Tuck

The mini tummy tuck only addresses the area of the abdomen below the navel but requires a shorter incision and allows for a shorter recovery time.

  • A short incision is made between the hip bones.
  • Excess skin and fat on the lower abdomen are removed.
  • The abdominal muscles below the umbilicus may be addressed.

FAQ

Am I a candidate for tummy tuck surgery?

Ideal candidates are in good standing health and have permanently stretched skin and excess fat deposits in their abdominal area. Candidates should also be at a stable weight before deciding to undergo the procedure and not plan on having future pregnancies.

Is there any pain associated with a tummy tuck?

Although a moderate amount of pain can be expected during the first couple days after a tummy tuck procedure, medication will be prescribed to alleviate discomfort. Dr. Schlechter offers EXPAREL®l to help minimize early post-operative discomfort.

How much downtime is associated with this procedure?

It generally takes three to four weeks to fully recover from a tummy tuck. However, many patients feel good enough to return to work after about a week.

Will I still have stretch marks after the tummy tuck?

Possibly. A tummy tuck removes most of the stretch marks on the lower abdomen, but you may have minimal stretch marks that are still visible on your upper abdomen. After the surgeon excises the redundant or sagging skin, the surgeon’s goal is to reposition the abdominal skin to achieve the best results possible. With suturing the remaining skin, stretch marks from the upper abdomen are moved to the mid and lower abdomen, which results in a flatter, smoother stomach with significantly fewer stretch marks.

Will I lose weight after my tummy tuck?

Abdominoplasty or tummy tuck is not a weight loss procedure. The purpose of the procedure is to remove excess skin and fat and to tighten the abdominal muscles. The amount of skin and fat removed does not equate into a significant amount of weight loss.

What is the cost of a tummy tuck?

The cost of your tummy tuck will depend on your specific anatomy and surgery. Please see our Plastic Surgery Procedure Pricing Guide for more information.

How long do the results last?

Results are meant to be permanent. To ensure results last as long as possible, patients should maintain a healthy weight and avoid pregnancy.

Is abdominoplasty covered by insurance?

In answering this question, it is important to distinguish the difference between a tummy tuck, also called an abdominoplasty, which is strictly cosmetic, and a lipectomy, also called a panniculectomy, which may be covered by insurance. It can be confusing. Abdominoplasty and other elective surgeries are not covered by insurance because they are not considered medically necessary. You may have heard that you can get a tummy tuck covered by insurance, but that is misleading. Insurance will cover a panniculectomy, which is just the removal of the excess skin, called the pannus if it hangs below the pubic bone. Insurance does not cover an abdominoplasty, which involves removing excess skin and subcutaneous fat, the cosmetic contouring of the abdomen and belly button along with rectus plication or tightening of the abdominal muscles. Many patients approved for a panniculectomy opt to pay out of pocket for the cosmetic component of the surgery so that they get the tight abs and contoured abdomen associated with a tummy tuck. All insurances have different criteria for covering an abdominal lipectomy.

Testimonials

I am very pleased with the tummy tuck results, and I would do it all over again. As I explained in the initial consultation meeting, I have been self-conscious for years and hated to wear anything that was form fitting. Everyone that I have been in contact with in the office has been very helpful and pleasant. Thank you very much. – FC
I had a full abdominoplasty and had a phenomenal experience. I feel like a million bucks. Best thing I ever did. Dr. Schlechter was so kind and patient. My only regret was that I didn't do it sooner! – MS
