Thinning hair can be detrimental to the confidence of both men and women. Having a full head of hair symbolizes health, youthfulness, and attractiveness, and the process of losing hair is something that many patients want to slow and revert. At Spring Ridge Plastic Surgery, Dr. June performs hair preservation using the Magellan® TruPRP™. This treatment takes advantage of the powerful growth factors that are harvested from your blood and utilizes them to prevent further hair loss and promote hair growth. Your blood contains platelets, which are responsible for tissue healing and new cell growth. When injected into areas of the scalp with thinning hair, these platelets can reactivate damaged hair follicles and enable regrowth.
Who Can Benefit from PRP for Hair Loss?
Magellan® TruPRP™ is ideal for both men and women who are suffering from the insecurities that thinning hair can cause. This treatment only targets thinning hair and is not recommended to fill bald patches or complete baldness. PRP stimulates hair follicle growth and reduces hair follicle shrinkage, providing positive effects.
The PRP Hair Restoration Procedure
Before your PRP hair restoration treatment, your hair should be clean and free of any hair products, including hairspray or styling gel. During the procedure, Dr. June will numb the thinning area of your scalp with a topical anesthetic and obtain a sample of blood from your arm. Dr. June will then place the blood through the revolutionary Magellan® TruPRP™ centrifugation machine where it will spin the blood to separate the plasma, platelets, white blood cells, and red blood cells. This process results in platelet-rich plasma (PRP) and platelet-poor plasma (PPP). Dr. June will then inject the highly concentrated PRP subcutaneously into the target area to stimulate hair growth. Finally, Dr. June will cover the treatment area with PPP. Most patients will require a minimum of three PRP treatments spaced 12 weeks apart.
Recovery and Results
PRP for hair loss is an outpatient procedure that requires little to no downtime, and patients can resume their daily activities immediately following treatment. This procedure is minimally invasive and virtually pain-free. Patients may experience temporary numbness in the scalp region, but this should dissipate within a few hours. Since the PRP is harvested from your blood, it is entirely safe, and there is no risk of allergies or toxicity. In over a half-million procedures performed, there have been no serious complications or side effects. This process aids in the restoration and growth of the cells, but it does not alter the DNA, making it a harmless and comfortable option.
Results will appear gradually after two to three weeks, and full results can be seen at 12 weeks. Hair restoration with PRP will not provide permanent improvement without subsequent treatment. Results are known to last for one year or longer, at which point repeat treatments can be performed. With this painless and autologous procedure, you can get back to enjoying a fuller, thicker head of hair.
