Chin Implant in Reading, PA

Though it is not always the first thing one thinks of when analyzing their face, the chin is an important feature that lends balance and creates a profile. Having what is known as a weak chin can actually make other features, such as your nose, look larger or out of proportion. Chin implants are commonly recommended to balance out facial proportions, and they are often performed along with rhinoplasty to create a more aesthetically appealing profile.

Chin Implants, Also Known as Mentoplasty

A mentoplasty, more commonly known as a chin implant, is a procedure in which a synthetic material is inserted into the chin to augment its size. These implants come in a vast assortment of shapes and sizes, allowing your surgeon to choose an implant that perfectly matches your face. Chin implants are commonly used to enhance the chin of both men and women. The procedure creates a more pleasing profile, and a strong chin balances out other facial features, especially the nose.

How Is a Chin Implant Performed?

Chin implants are normally performed on an outpatient basis using IV sedation and local anesthesia. Your surgeon will begin by making a small incision either inside your mouth or in the natural crease just under your chin. These locations are chosen to minimize scarring. The skin is gently stretched to form the pocket in which the implant will be inserted over the bony chin area. The implant is carefully inserted beneath your skin and positioned properly. Finally, the incision is closed using fine sutures. The entire procedure can take less than an hour, and you are free to return home the same day.

Am I a Candidate for a Chin Implant?

If you have a weak chin, you may be a good candidate for a chin implant. You may also be a good candidate if you have jowls or saggy skin around your chin as an implant could reduce these problems. Because a chin implant is a surgical procedure, you need to be in good overall health. Be sure to let your surgeon know about any pre-existing conditions and any medications you are taking during your initial consultation.

Chin Implant Recovery

Immediately following the procedure, a dressing is applied that can be removed in two to three days. Mild pain, swelling and bruising are common, but your surgeon will prescribe medications to control these problems. You may be required to have a liquid and soft food diet for a few days following surgery to limit chewing. Patients can normally resume their usual activities within 10 days, and your chin should be fully healed within about six weeks.

How Much Does a Chin Implant Cost?

The cost of your chin implant will depend on your specific anatomy and surgery. Please see our Plastic Surgery Procedure Pricing Guide for more information.
