Sweat Gland Ablation

Excessive sweating is a common problem that affects up to 20 percent of the adult population. It can be very life altering for some people. Clothes are ruined by sweat stains, and sufferers frequently face embarrassment at work and among friends. When the best antiperspirant does little to ease your problem, you may feel helpless. Fortunately, there is a way to ease excessive sweating. Laser sweat gland ablation is a procedure that is very effective and longer lasting than previously used treatments like BOTOX® Cosmetic injections.

Sweat Gland Ablation

Sweat gland ablation is a procedure during which the sweat glands are destroyed. The operation is performed with a hand held laser device that destroys the glands quickly and safely. There is very little risk for complications, and the treatment is effective in approximately 80 percent of patients. The results of this treatment are permanent, so you will no longer need to worry about excessive sweating following sweat gland ablation.

How is Sweat Gland Ablation Performed?

Sweat gland ablation is performed using a laser system. We use the Cellulaze system. You will remain awake during the procedure, but local anesthesia will be used to numb the area. Your surgeon will make a very small incision in your armpit area. A small cannula, or hollow tube, is gently inserted into the incision. Inside the cannula is a tiny laser fiber. This fiber delivers laser light that destroys the sweat glands in your arm pits. The system is very safe and has controls that keep it from getting too hot. It is also very precise, delivering laser energy only to carefully targeted areas.

Am I a Candidate for Sweat Gland Ablation with Cellulaze?

Because the sweat gland ablation process is minimally invasive, it is safe for many people. If you struggle with excessive sweating that cannot be controlled even by prescription antiperspirant, you may be a good candidate for the procedure. You should be in good overall health and free from conditions that could delayed healing or increased bleeding. Let your doctor know about any medications you are taking to avoid possible complications.

Recovery from Sweat Gland Ablation

You may experience a bit of swelling, bruising and soreness for a few days following sweat gland ablation with Cellulaze. These problems should be mild, though, and can usually be managed with over-the-counter pain medication. Most people are able to return to work the following day, and they are able to resume most normal activities within a week or two. Healing generally takes approximately two weeks, and complications are rare.
