Breast Asymmetry

Sometimes, revisionary breast surgery is needed to rectify breast asymmetry for women with breast implants. In other cases, natural breast asymmetry may need a variety of breast procedures to create balance. If you developed noticeable breast asymmetry after a breast augmentation procedure, breast revision surgery can correct the issue and restore breast symmetry and balance.

Causes of Breast Asymmetry

Natural breast asymmetry is more common than many women realize. Most women have slight breast asymmetry that is imperceptible, usually a difference in size of less than one cup. Pre-existing asymmetry is sometimes exaggerated when implants are inserted into the breasts, especially if your surgeon does not account for these anatomic realities when preparing for and performing breast augmentation. For instance, some implants may amplify minor differences in nipple position, breast size, or breast shape, causing breast asymmetry to become more noticeable.

Surgical complications after breast augmentation can also lead to breast asymmetry. As examples, the unexpected occurrence of capsular contracture, bottoming out, double bubble deformity, implant deflation or rupture, and other similar complications can create noticeable differences between the breasts.

Poor technique when placing the implants may mean that one implant is situated higher in the breast than the other, making the breasts appear lopsided. In all of these cases, breast revision surgery can restore breast symmetry.

The Solution: Breast Revision Surgery

Breast revision surgery can correct breast asymmetry. The surgical techniques used in your breast revision will depend on the source of the asymmetry. In the case of natural asymmetries that are merely exaggerated by your breast implants, there are several approaches that Dr. Schlechter will discuss with you in detail. In the case of augmentation asymmetries, Dr. Schlechter may either permanently remove the implants, exchange them for two differently sized implants, or relocate the nipple of one or both sides so that the breasts look and feel more even. If surgical complications have occurred, Dr. Schlechter will correct the complication as well as the asymmetry. This will usually require exchanging the implants and may also include scraping away scar tissue, removing deflated or ruptured implants and loose silicone, tightening or adjusting the breast pockets, and/or lifting the breasts. With breast revision surgery, Dr. Schlechter can enhance the results of your breast augmentation to give your breasts a more pleasing and balanced aesthetic appearance.

Dr. Schlechter has a reputation for his low rate of surgical complications after breast augmentation. If you have breast asymmetry, surgical complications, or other reasons that you are dissatisfied with your breast augmentation results, Dr. Schlechter can perform breast revision surgery to improve the appearance of your breasts.
