Gynecomastia

Gynecomastia is a term for enlarged breasts in men. It can be caused by numerous factors including hormone changes, aging, drug use, heredity and disease. It can also be idiopathic meaning that there is no medical cause for it. No matter the cause of the condition, it is very embarrassing and can lead to emotional distress and lack of self-esteem. Fortunately, it is possible to correct this problem surgically. Male breast reduction is a procedure in which excess breast tissue is removed to restore a more normal appearance.

Male Breast Reduction

Countless men experience distress as the result of having oversized breasts or enlarged, puffy nipples. The condition affects men of all ages and can lead to a feminine appearance in the chest area. Sometimes the breasts can become saggy as the result of the excess weight of the breast tissue. Through male breast reduction, it is possible to remove this tissue to give the breast region a more masculine appearance.

Dr. Benjamin Schlechter and his staff did an amazing job throughout the entire process, and I could not be more pleased with the results.

How is Male Breast Reduction Performed?

Breast reduction in males can be performed using different techniques. If your primary problem is excess fatty tissue, liposuction is often sufficient. When there is excess skin and glandular tissue, however, it may be necessary to use an incisional technique. An incision is usually made under the arm or at the edge of the areola where it will be hidden as much as possible. Excess skin, fat and glandular tissue are carefully removed, and the incisions are sutured back together. In many cases, a combination of liposuction and incisional surgery is used to achieve the best results. The procedure is performed under IV sedaton, on an outpatient basis.

Am I a Candidate for Male Breast Reduction?

If you are a male who suffers from embarrassment as the result of enlarged breasts, you may be a candidate for male breast reduction. You should be in good overall health and free from diseases or disorders that could affect healing or cause excessive bleeding. If your breast enlargement was caused by hormonal changes or disease, it is important to address these issues prior to undergoing surgery. Good candidates are of a healthy weight and have realistic goals regarding the procedure.

Recovery from Male Breast Reduction

Following the procedure, you may experience some bruising, swelling and pain. You may be instructed to wear a compression garment for the first few weeks to minimize swelling. Your surgeon will also prescribe medication to ease your discomfort. You will need to avoid strenuous activities like heavy lifting and exercise for up to three to six weeks, but you may be able to return to work in just a few days. The results will be noticeable right away, but it will take several months for the areas to heal completely.
