What Is Rhinoplasty?

Rhinoplasty is a plastic surgery procedure that enhances the appearance of the nose. Aesthetic issues regarding the size, angle, tip, width, and prominence of the nose can all be corrected with nose surgery. This procedure is designed to help those who are unhappy with their noses due to genetic abnormalities, congenital deformities, injuries, age-related changes, or personal preferences. Nose surgery is one of the most popular plastic procedures today and can significantly improve your facial appearance and attractiveness.

Achieved With Rhinoplasty

A More Attractive Nose

There are a plethora of reasons why people dislike their noses. Rhinoplasty can give you a more attractive nose by changing its size, adjusting the shape of the tip, changing the bridge angle, narrowing or widening the nostrils, altering the angle between the nose and the upper lip, straightening the bridge, and more.

Your Rhinoplasty Options

Rhinoplasty is performed using either the open or closed surgical technique. Depending on what corrections are needed, Dr. Schlechter will determine which technique should be used for your procedure. In both cases, the procedure will be performed in a surgery center, and you will be placed under sedation or general anesthesia.

Open Rhinoplasty

  • This technique uses an external approach and places an incision at the base of the vertical strip of tissue between the nostrils.
  • The skin of the nose is separated from the bone and cartilage, and the nasal structures are sculpted into the desired shape.
  • The skin is re-draped over the new nasal framework.
  • A small, inconspicuous scar underneath the nose may be detectable to the trained eye.
  • More dramatic changes may be possible with this technique.

Closed Rhinoplasty

  • This technique uses an internal approach and places all incisions inside the nose.
  • The skin of the nose is separated from the bone and cartilage, and the nasal structures are sculpted to the desired shape.
  • The skin is re-draped over the new nasal framework.
  • There is no visible scarring with this technique.
  • This technique allows for limited visibility and tissue adjustment, which can limit the potential changes.

FAQ

Am I a good candidate for rhinoplasty?

The best candidates for rhinoplasty seek to improve their appearance but are not looking for perfection. Candidates should maintain realistic expectations and have no significant health concerns. Good candidates are also non-smokers or are willing to quit for several months around the time of their procedure. Full nasal growth is required, which means that qualified patients are in their late teen years or older.

How do I know if rhinoplasty is right for me?

If you are dissatisfied with the appearance of your nose, rhinoplasty may be a good procedure for you. However, there may be other options that are more suitable for your needs. For example, some people who believe they need rhinoplasty surgery may be a better candidate for chin augmentation. A deficient chin will give the appearance that the nose is more prominent than it really is. The best way to know if you need rhinoplasty is to schedule your personal consultation with Dr. Schlechter, as he can help you determine whether this procedure or another procedure is right for you.

What should I expect during recovery after rhinoplasty?

After rhinoplasty, a splint will be applied to the nose to help maintain its new shape as it heals. Nasal packing or soft splints may also be inserted into the nose to stabilize the internal structures. A feeling of puffiness, aching, a dull headache, swelling, and bruising are all common for the first few days. By the end of the first few days, these symptoms should begin to resolve, and all packing, splints, and stitches should be removed. Most patients will be able to return to work after five to seven days. Physical activity should be limited for four to six weeks after surgery. Swelling of the internal nasal structures may take up to a full year to completely subside.

How long does it take to see the results of rhinoplasty?

The results of rhinoplasty will become noticeable as the nasal tissues heal during the weeks after rhinoplasty. Significant yet natural-looking results can be seen right away and will improve over time. However, as the tissues heal, subtle changes will be detectable in the months following your surgery. The final results will likely not be visible until approximately one year after surgery, at which point all swelling should have diminished and all the tissues should be fully healed.

Can I undergo rhinoplasty a second time?

If you are unhappy with your results or the way your nose healed after your previous rhinoplasty, you may be able to undergo a secondary rhinoplasty. Dr. Schlechter offers rhinoplasty revision surgery to correct issues that occur following rhinoplasty or issues that were not appropriately resolved with the initial procedure.

What is the cost of rhinoplasty?

The cost of your rhinoplasty will depend on your specific anatomy and surgery. Please see our Plastic Surgery Procedure Pricing Guide for more information.
