Implant Explant

Breast augmentation doesn’t have to be a lifetime commitment. Women who need or desire permanent removal of their breast implants can undergo revisionary breast surgery for implant explantation.

Reasons for Implant Explant

Implant explantation or “implant explant” is when a woman’s breast implants are permanently removed. Women may undergo implant explant for a variety of reasons.

  • Complications

Some women suffer from unexpected surgical complications such as capsular contracture, bottoming out, or double bubble deformity. If these complications are particularly painful or recurrent, implant explant may be recommended.

  • Pain

Implants can significantly increase the weight of the breasts, and oversized breasts can cause chronic pain, shoulder grooves, difficulty exercising, and other painful complications. Women who have difficulty or pain with mammograms may also choose to have their implants removed.

  • Personal Desire

Women frequently undergo implant explant due to changes in their personal desire. Years after undergoing breast augmentation, some women decide they want a more natural and petite look. Others may become unhappy with their breast sagging or experience weight gain that alters the look of their breasts.

Regardless of your reasons for implant explant, Dr. Schlechter respects every situation individually and will offer his expert recommendation on whether implant removal is best for you.

The Solution Through Breast Revision

When a patient has chosen implant explant, breast revision surgery is the solution. Dr. Schlechter will perform the procedure and remove the implants from the breasts along with any loose silicone or scar tissue that has led to surgical complications. For women who do not have surgical complications, Dr. Schlechter may be able to leave the tissue capsule intact even while removing the implants. Often, breast implants cause a degree of sagging and stretching of the breast tissues, and removal of the implants will require resolution of breast tissue laxity. Dr. Schlechter can address this issue using breast lift techniques to rectify any sagging and improve breast shape and fullness. The goal with breast revision surgery is always to produce the most aesthetically pleasing and natural-looking results. Dr. Schlechter will help you to achieve your aesthetic goals and the best surgical results with breast revision.
